An eye-catching building in Sheffield city centre is to be put up for sale by auction this month. The property, at 16-20 Sidney Street, is famous for the landmark, multi-coloured mural which covers its entire frontage with an industrial heritage-themed design.

The property will go under the hammer, with planning consent for conversion to four residential units, in the next online auction to be held by Mark Jenkinson, part of property consultancy Eddisons, on 24 September. The building has a £375,000 guide price.

Most recently the home of art gallery, screen printing workshop and framing business, APG Works, the 2,000 sq ft courtyard property is thought to have originally been a cutlery works.

Now planning permission has been given for change of use of the front of the building to two three-bedroom townhouses and for the rear workshop to be converted to two two-bedroom apartments. The property also has parking spaces within its courtyard.

Adrian Little, a director at auction house Mark Jenkinson, said: “Everyone in Sheffield will know this historic building for its renowned mural by local artists Jo Peel and Mark McClure.

“It’s in a great city centre location, close to the Sheffield Hallam University campus and is a really rare opportunity for a new owner to breathe new life into a unique piece of heritage with a residential redevelopment. Needless to say, we have already had lots of interest in this special building.”

This month’s Mark Jenkinson auction, which includes the former APG Works on Sidney Street in Sheffield city centre, has new lots added daily and will be held on 24 September at www.markjenkinson.co.uk

Over the last 40 years Adrian has been involved in the sale by auction of over 10,000 properties in the Yorkshire and Humber region, ranging from small sites and ground rents to large industrial estates and residential investments. He has been most fortunate to have sold many landmark buildings throughout the region and is particularly interested in properties that require modernisation, restoration or redevelopment.

Having spent many hours on the rostrum at Bramall Lane, he saw the incredibly successful transition to online auctions seeing some £100m of residential, commercial, agricultural and industrial lots being sold for private, corporate and local authority clients. In March 2023, he joined Eddisons and Pugh & Co to forward this success and continue to offer personal service with a larger national presence .
