ONE AFTERNOON IN JUNE
Whilst Sri Lanka were thumping New Zealand in the Twenty Twenty at Trent Bridge on Tuesday, another battle of nerves was taking place at Bramall Lane in Mark Jenkinson and son’s fifth property auction of the year. By the end of the afternoon the results kept the firm top of the league in Sheffield and South Yorkshire with some £15 million worth of property auction sales during the first half of the year
As with the wonderful game of Cricket (a sentiment not held by regular auctioneer and writer Paul Hough but very much by his colleague Adrian Little) the idea of an auction is that you have people in the crowd looking to restrict the bidding whilst the auctioneer’s aim is to maximise the price for the client. Sometimes the bids flow effortlessly and at other times it can be really hard work in a market that could still resemble a tricky wicket
Tuesday’s sale was perhaps more of the latter than the former as some lots sold exceptionally well whilst others struggled to register a result and “bother the scorer” so to speak
The innings started strongly with the first five lots all selling above reserve with notable appearances from Main Road, Darnall (60), Northfield Road ,Crookes (91), Moffatt Road, Heeley (93) Charnock Drive, Gleadless (a fine 120) and Hopefield Avenue ,Intake (77,500)
As with many England innings there was then a bit of a mid order collapse with a flat on Infirmary Road and three houses in Dinnington failing to get going. Fortunately the afternoon improved as Edge Hill Road went for £151,000 and four Leasehold flats on East bank Road went for a rapid £110,000
Following one or two near misses the afternoon drew to a close with strong performances from the long term residential investment properties in and around Chesterfield and a couple of “properties with potential” in Sheffield.
